History of Morbi

Morbi is a City of Rajkot District, 64 Km from Rajkot. Government ST is the main mean of transport.
Untill 1947 Morbi was a princely state. Raja Mayurdvaj was the king of Morbi. Morbi devastated in 1979 with flood. Most of historical monuments were ruined in this flood. But now Morbi is once again immerging as Hub for tiles & clock manufacuring.
You can reach Morbi within 2 hrs. from Rajkot. There are two busstands in Morbi New Busstand & Old Busstand.
There is Hotel Manali Just Opposite to New Busstand. You can easily find a room here. Hotel rooms are easily available between Rs.200-1000.
Mani Mandir is a temple situated in the courtyard of Wellingdon Secretariat. The images of Laxmi Narayan, Mahakali, Ramchandraji, Radha- Krishna and Shiva are worshiped in this temple. Mani Mandir is made out of Jaipur stone with excellent workmanship and exquisitely carved elements-arches, brackets, jalis, chhatris and shikhara. Wellingdon Secretariat is an excellent example of the application of principles of Rajput architecture by master craftsmen, at the turn of the century.
The prosperous city Morbi has much of the built heritage and town planning is attributed to the efficient administration of Sir Waghji, who came to the throne in 1879 and ruled till 1948. Sir Waghji acted as the Ruler, Manager, Patron and Policemen of the state with great authority, always keeping the citizens' interests in mind. Sir Waghji, like other contemporary rulers of Saurashtra, built roads, Railway Network of 70 miles connecting Wadhvan and Morbi and two small ports of Navlakhi and Vavania for exporting the state's production of Salt and Cloth. The railway station of Morbi is a beautiful example of Railway architecture, combining Indian and European architectural elements. In 1979, the city was badly affected due to flooding caused by morvi dam burst. But one can see the spirit of people of Morbi as today it is one of the most growing industrial cities of the state.

Morvi Floods (1979)

In 1979, western India witnessed devastating floods. Thousands lost their lives and property worth crores were lost in towns and villages across Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. But the worst-hit area in the 1979 floods was, undoubtedly, the Morvi-Malia belt near Rajkot in Gujarat.
About 1,200 people died in the Morvi region alone after the frenzied Machhu river overflowed into the town and its surrounding areas in the last week of August. A visit to the site revealed sights of mass destruction. According to relief workers, bloated bodies and animal carcasses floated through the streets, and survivors were seen hanging onto trees and rooftops. There were also some heart-wrenching scenes. Relief workers found the body of a young girl clutching the rakhi on the wrist of her brother. Father and son were found frozen to death on their easy chairs. But the most unfortunate incident occurred in a temple situated in the Vajepur area of Morvi. As soon as worshippers realised that water levels were rising, they got hold of a ladder and started scampering up the temple. However, the ladder broke mid-way, people waiting to climb to safety were soon washed away by the swirling waters.
Relief operation was hampered for days on end as foot-long layer of slush covered the entire town. With no mode of transport and electricity, work of collecting bodies was painfully slow. In fact, on the first day of the relief operation, only 30 bodies were lifted.
To help survivors get over the tragedy to help rebuild the township, the Times of India set up a relief fund. Started with an initial contribution from the Times Group, the fund's collection was used for constructing a primary school building in a village in Morvi. In another village, where women and children had to walk for three to four km for drinking water, TOIRF provided them with drinking water supply in thier own village.

Where Kachchh and Saurashtra Meet Morbi was the capital of the former princely state of Morbi, ruled by the Jadeja Rajput clan. The house of Morbi claimed seniority over the Jadejas of Jamnagar and Kachchh. The beautiful town of Morbi is located on the banks of the Machchhu River. Morbi’s historic ‘Julto Pul’ to re-open in last week of Jan

Posted: Jan 05, 2008 at 0000 hrs IST

Rajkot, January 4 The historic Julto Pul (hanging bridge) of Morbi will be thrown open to the public, in the last week of January, after a gap of nearly three decades. The repair and renovation work on this engineering marvel, inspired by the famous Hanging Bridge of London, is on the verge of completion.
Spanning the Machuchu River, it is one of the few hanging structures in India. It was constructed of special teak wood, iron and wires imported from England by the erstwhile ruler of Morbi, Thakore Vaghe, some 180 years back.
Due to its unique design and cultural value, the bridge has almost become synonymous with the industrial town of Morbi in Rajkot district.

The bridge connecting Barbargadh Palace to Nazarbaug was in operation till 1979 when a devastating cyclone struck this town. Since then, several repairs have taken place, but due to its deteriorating condition, the Rajkot district administration closed the bridge to save this famous Saurashtra landmark from complete collapse.
The Rajkot collectorate's call for the public-private participation for the renovation of Julto Pul received a favourable response from the Morbi-based Ajanta Group, who are among the country's leading wall-clock and tile manufacturers.
"The Julto Pul is being renovated at a cost of Rs 1 crore. The entire expense has been borne by the Ajanta Group. This time, superior quality material has been used to give the bridge at-least 10 years’ relief from wear and tear," said Rajkot District Collector Pradeep Sharma.
Sharma said over 90 per cent of the repair work has been completed and the Julto Pul is likely to be reopened for the public from January 27. The district administration is, however, yet to decide whether to declare it as a tourist site, or to open it for regular traffic. "It is yet to be decided whether it should be reopened just as a tourist site or also allow commuters on the bridge," said Sharma
The Julto Pul was constructed over a span of four years starting 1883. The bridge is 756-feet long and 4.6-feet wide. The main wooden lane has now been replaced with aluminium composite sheet, which is not only durable, but more lightweight compared to teak. The wooden support beams have also been replaced with weatherproof aluminium channels. To give it a complete weatherproof effect, the sheets and channels are being coated with high temperature aluminium paint.

મોરબીની વાણિયણ – Song Related to Morbi

Ajanta Group shelves IPO, tourism project

Posted on October 14, 2010
After having shelved its project to manufacture electric cars in 2008, Morbi-Based Ajanta Group, popularly known for making wall clocks, has now decided to drop its tourism project entailing an investment of Rs 210 crore.
Subsequently, Ajanta’s plan to come out with an IPO also stands cancelled as the group wanted to raise money for partly financing this project.
“We had inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government for taking up a tourism project with an investment of around Rs 210 crore. The project has been cancelled due to some legal hurdles and we have decided not to pursue this project anymore,” said Jaysukhbhai Patel, Managing Director, Ajanta Group.
“We also considered a public issue for our tourism project and cement plant in Kutch but we have dropped IPO plans as well,” he added.
Sources privy to the development informed that the company wanted to raise Rs 300-600 crore from primary market
However, Ajanta expects to start work on the project by the end of 2010.
Post cancellation of its tourism, Ajanta Group now wants to focus on its existing projects. The group is also working on a hydro power plant project in three places in Gujarat. It will invest about Rs 100 crore and work for first plant will be kicked-off by end of December this year.
It may be mentioned here that Ajanta Group, which is also into electric bikes manufacturing, also had plans to make electric cars when Tata Motors announced its Nano car. Ajanta even imported electric car model from China but it shelved its electric car project in 2008.
Morbi-based Ajanta Group has Rs 700 crore turnover and is a well established player in the field of wall clocks. Later on the group diversified into auto, CFL lamp and vitrified tiles.

Compete with China, Modi tells Gujarat’s ceramic industry

Gandhinagar, Sep 21 (IANS) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday hoped that the state’s ceramic industry will reinvent itself to provide strong competition to China in the global market.
He was speaking after inaugurating a German multinational company Duravit’s first ceramic sanitaryware manufacturing plant in India near Tarapur in central Gujarat.
The German firm had signed a MoU during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit (VGGIS) in 2007 to set up the plant with an investment of Rs.70 crore, but defied the global recessionary trend to set up the modern plant.
Spread over 1.70 lakh square metre, the Rs.120-crore facility will produce about five lakh units of sanitaryware annually.
Modi said the Gujarat’s ceramic industry was traditionally situated near the Morbi industrial belt in the Saurashtra region, but it was laudable that the German sanitaryware major set up this plant in Anand district.
He wished the state’s ceramic industry would now compete with China in global market.
He suggested that Duravit start a hockey academy in Gujarat in keeping with its reputation in corporate social responsibility and promoting the game.
The German company’s chief executive Franz Kook, chairman Gregor Greneirt and managing director Asutosh Shah gave details of the plant and the project.

Women rule at Ajanta clock manufacturing unit in Rajkot

Posted on March 8, 2010
It is almost evening and 20-year-old Avina Jakasania, dressed in a faded ‘salwar kameez’, is hard at work, bent over an electronic device being assembled at a low-cost, clock-manufacturing unit in a dusty town of Morbi in Gujarat.
Avina is no ordinary girl. Having lost her father when she was barely in her teens, this nimble village girl goes through the daily grind to support her family, unperturbed by the fact that she has polio in her legs and needs assistance to move around.
Avina is not alone. At the Ajanta clock manufacturing unit, nestled away in the countryside of Rajkot district in Gujarat, it’s mostly women who keep the hands of time moving. Untold stories of grit, determination and fightback abound at the two units of Oreva Group’s (the second being in Kutch) where over 7,500 women—mostly under the age of 25— work in unison to churn out profits for the Rs 1,000-crore group.
Terms like feminism, women’s liberation and empowerment might sound alien to this motley group, but quiz anyone and they eagerly narrate how their experiences at Ajanta have infused confidence into their young personalities.
Recounting the history of the clock-manufacturing unit, the MD of Oreva group, Jaisukh Patel recalls that the unit was earlier a male-bastion. However, after the first group of 15 female workers joined in 1987-88, there was no looking back. “Today we have about 100 buses that ply to and fro daily from the unit carrying women from 185 villages situated in and around Morbi,” says Patel.
From producing about 100 pieces of clocks per day, the women today help churn out about 40,000 units of low-cost clocks a day. At Ajanta, females occupy all rank-and-file. “The group has women working at all levels. We have women holding ME electrical degrees, MBAs and BBAs working at our corporate house in Morbi. It’s women who man crucial positions in purchase, marketing and import sections,” he said.
“We do precision work at this clock manufacturing unit. The nimble hands of women are best suited for this kind of jobs. The management had a lot of difficulty recruiting female workers when it started off in the early 1970s. I was among the first batch of employees who were recruited at the unit, most of whom were the relatives and friends of the owners,” says Ranjana Patel, who at 55, is perhaps the oldest female member at the Morbi-unit.
In the past, convincing women to join the workforce was the most difficult part. “We had to meet their parents, convince them of the advantages it held for their female child and guarantee the safety of their wards,” says Ranjana who is also the production manager and incharge of all recruitment and HR matters at the unit.
And it not just about the money that they get from this job. “In all these years I have also earned a lot of self-respect within society,” says 45-year-old Harshaben Vadaska who was forced to take up a job at the Morbi-unit after her husband passed away 14 years ago. A job at the manufacturing unit has kept women like her going. “This work has helped me raise my two kids,” she says.
If instances like Harshaben are tales of struggle and determination, then the predominantly younger lot of the female workforce, comprising of the likes of Bharti Serariya (19), Asha Pithwa (22), Bharti Bhatsana (22) and Chetna Kotadia (23) look at Ajanta’s clock manufacturing unit as a means to carve out their careers in a region where girl education and employment are not spoken about in very respectable terms.
“People in this part of the world do not speak highly of women who step out of their homes for work. However, my coming to work not only helps my family financially but also opens up an avenue to build a career for myself,” says Asha who is one of the five female siblings at her house in Bagathala village situated about 13 kilometers from Morbi.
Today there are women coming to the unit not just from Morbi, but even from the nearby villages. The Ajanta unit has now become symbolic of women independence and liberty. “Apart from generating incomes for their families, women have learnt discipline and earned self-respect,” remarks Ranjana.

Saurashtra plastic industry blooms as villagers take to scientific farming

Posted on March 6, 2010
As industries across the world struggled hard to cope with the economic slowdown, the plastic and polymer processing sector in Saurashtra grew at an unprecedented rate over the last couple of years. And it is agriculture that has been a driving force for this industry.
Increasing use of plastic equipment and tools instead of cement-based products has led to mushrooming of units across the Saurashtra region. As many as 300 new units have come up in the last two years, taking the total number to 1,250.
While Shapar-Veraval and Metoda have been hubs of plastic industry for over two decades, new clusters have come up in Morbi (Rajkot district). Last financial year, the industry registered a turnover of Rs 8,000 crore, 15 per cent more than the previous year.
Saurashtra Plastic Manufactures Association president Pravin Gothi said: “Thanks to farmers, who are turning to new methods of agriculture, the sector has recorded a considerable growth. Agriculture has been a major driving force for this industry. Of the 15 per cent growth registered, agriculture sector accounts for 7 per cent.”

Mani Mandir

Home > Mani Mandir

Mani Mandir is a stunning piece of temple architecture, situated in the courtyard of Wellingdon Secretariat, in Morbi, Gujarat. Built in 1935, this magnificent structure took shape in Jaipur stone, adorned with exquisitely carved elements-arches, brackets, jalis, chhatris and shikhara. The temple enshrines the images of Lakshmi Narayan, Goddess Kali, Lord Ram, Radha- Krishna and Lord Shiva.
Mani Mandir stands as a testimony to the excellent workmanship and dexterity of its master craftsmen and architects, who had conceived and materialized the structure at the turn of 20th century.
Morbi’s Mani Mandir, an excellent piece of temple architecture and a palace belonging to the erstwhile princely state of Morbi in Saurashtra is going to be renovated and converted into a first of its kind museum showcasing the socio-cultural heritage of the Saurashtra region.
Built by Thakor Saheb Sir Waghji to immortalize his love for a girl named Mani, the building is a symbol of love that stands testimony to excellent workmanship .
After Independence, it was transformed into a government building. In the 2001 earthquake, the palace was damaged to a great extent. The state government, on February 4, handed over the place to the Rajmata and Rajkumari on a 20-year lease at a token rate of Re 1 per year.
The erstwhile royal family has now accepted responsibility of the project to renovate and transform the building into a museum, right from funding to execution. The royal family has set aside funds amounting to a whopping Rs 20 crore for renovating the building and developing a museum which will act as a platform to promote cultural and social heritage of Gujarat with special focus on Saurashtra. The highlight of the museum post-renovation will be tableaux by over 700 erstwhile princely states that made up Kathiawar before Independence. The cultural diversity in attire, food, dances, arts and the like will find place in them.
Mani Mandir is a structure adorned with exquisitely carved arches, brackets, jalis, chhatris and shikhara. At the centre of the temple complex, overlooking the river Machhu is the temple of Radha Krishna. A rectangular double-storied complex with over 130 rooms surrounds the temple. Waghji had completed the structure at a cost of Rs 30 lakh in 1922 and died the same year.
The 25-metre high structure survived the massive flood that hit Morbi town in 1979 when the Machhu Dam broke, but not the earthquake. After the quake, the entire taluka administration, including the courts that the building housed, was moved to a new location.

It is poetry in granite, a low two storey in banded horizontal fenestration, curves and bays, which resembles the London underground stations of Charles Holden. The palace has six drawing rooms, six dining rooms, and fourteen bedrooms. The decorated subterranean bedroom, with many erotic murals and a bathroom made from seashells are also noteworthy.
